Cami walked into the station back in uniform.

Franny hugged her. “I’m so sorry about Juan. About all of this. I…I just can’t believe something this awful could happen here in sweet little Shady Valley.”

“Me, either. If you’d told me a few weeks ago this could happen, I would have told you no way. Is the boss in?”

“He is, but he’s very cranky. You better not call him that today. Actually, I’ve never seen him quite like this in all the years I’ve worked with him.”

“Really? What’s he doing?”

“He’s yelling at people. Even yelled at me.”

“Wow. We’re all on edge but that doesn’t sound like him at all. What’s the problem?”

“He’s been trying to find out where Lonnie is so he can talk to him, but the FBI keeps stonewalling him. They said he could talk to him on the phone, but Stanley’s insisting on seeing him in person. And they won’t give him the location.”

“With all that’s come to light about Becca and Juan, I don’t think Lonnie’s the key to finding Angie. Though I’m glad he got caught.”

“I agree but Stanley’s not listening to me or the FBI.”

“Wish me luck.” She walked over and knocked on Stanley’s door.

“Come in.” It sounded more like a bark than an invitation.

She walked in.

Stanley motioned for her to sit down. The phone was up to his ear. “I don’t care what you say. Lonnie Ellsworth is wanted in regard to a missing person’s case here. His fiancée. I want to talk to him. In person. And I’ll keep calling up the chain until I find someone who has the authority to make that happen.”

She sat down.

His face turned bright red, making his startling blue eyes even more startling. “When did money become more important than a person? I want to talk to your supervisor.” He wrote down a name and number. “I need to talk to him in person, not on the phone.” A pause. “We’ll see about that.” Stanley slammed the phone down. “Can you believe this? They’re refusing to tell me where he is. Refusing to let me talk to him. As if they don’t trust me.”

“It sounded as though they said you could talk to him on the phone.”

“The phone.” He rolled his eyes. “Whoever heard of doing an interrogation by phone. Just ridiculous.”

“I think you should calm down, Bo…” His withering look stopped her from completing the word.

“I should have listened to you from the start, Cami. I should have put you in charge of the case. Zack is taking this investigation off the rails.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I think Zack’s being doing a good job. I don’t think Lonnie’s criminal activities have anything to do with Angie’s disappearance. I believe they’re just coincidental.”

His blue eyes burnt a hole in her forehead. “Really? You think all of this is just a happy little coincidence?”

“Well…I…I must admit it’s all bizarre.”

Stanley shook his head. “It’s the last time I take a vacation. I leave for a few days, and all the criminals cut loose.
